Joe Lackey,
President of Big Frog of South Tampa

My name is Joe Lackey and I am the owner of Big Frog Custom
T-Shirts of South Tampa. I am from a background of being a
self employed building contractor for over 30 years. I had
made a decision in 2002 to leave the construction industry
for a less stressful environment.
I met the franchise owners Ron, Tina and Leeward in my
capacity as the owner of an unassociated retail store I had
opened in 2005. I had a need for t-shirts in this other
business and found them at a time before a franchise existed
and they were known as Bay Area Custom T-Shirts. The idea
of what they were doing and the concept that I could
actually order t-shirts and other garments in any quantity I
needed seemed like such good idea since I was forced to buy
100s of garments in the past to make the cost reasonable. I
had ordered t-shirts from Bay Area for about a year as a
wholesale customer and the thought continued to occur to me
what a really unique business Bay Area had. I did some
homework and discovered that a business model like this
didn’t exist in Tampa at all. Once I realized that screen

printers are not the competition this business model became even
more intriguing. I finally made a call to Ron and put out the
idea that if they ever wanted to open a store in South Tampa
that I wanted to be the person to do it. From that conversation
evolved me opening up the “guinea pig” Big Frog store in south
Tampa. When I opened my store in July, 2008 I was still under
the umbrella of Bay Area Custom T-Shirts as a company store with
the agreement that I could convert to a franchise when that
entity became a reality.
We have now been open for 10 months. Our role as guinea pig
has had its ups and downs but we have learned from our mistakes
and have incorporated many of our do’s and don’ts into company
policy. Through months of hard work and networking our business
is seeing increases on a regular basis... I opened this business
in probably the worst economic time I have had to experience and
we had managed to have a successful store that has
done nothing but go up in sales. This is a huge testament to
the business model, the franchise group and good business
practices.
The franchise group consisting of Ron & Tina DeFrece and Leeward
Bean has been completely forthright and honest throughout our
entire business relationship and in most cases have above and
beyond to make certain I got any support needed to help me get
going. We are now a completely self sufficient store and I have
had the opportunity and pleasure to tell my story to many
prospective franchisees. The most important question I am asked
by future and prospective franchisees is “Would I do it again?”
and I can answer that with an unqualified YES.
Sincerely,
Joe K. Lackey |

“My wife and I were
looking for the perfect business to invest in and we found it!
During our search we stumbled upon Big Frog and have never
looked back. The support we received from our initial
investigation until now has been above and beyond what we
expected. Behind what we considered a very attractive business
model were great people that helped make our LEAP into franchise
ownership a fantastic experience. Our business has continued to
grow month after month and we look forward to opening additional
franchises.”
